What are ecosystem services?

In this animation, researchers from Eurac Research and their partners explain what ecosystem services are. Throughout the past decade, the topic of ecosystem services has become extremely popular in research, resulting in a huge variety of definitions and terms. For example, ecosystem services are defined as benefits people obtain from ecosystems; or the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human well-being. In this animation, we show you few Alpine relevant ecosystem services such as pure groundwater that we use as drinking water, Alpine grasslands and meadows that provide biomass, CO2 sequestration by Alpine forests, or recreation opportunities.
